Advocating for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

As a disability litigator, Andrew November's job is to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves, or at the very least, fight right alongside. You do not have to be a disability litigator to ally with a marginalized group. During this session, we will spend the first half focusing on Deaf Rights, advocating for Deaf individuals, and accessibility, including techniques such as closed captioning. For the second half-hour, Keri November, Andrew's wife, will teach basic American Sign Language so that you have some knowledge and awareness if you meet a Deaf signer. Total CEU 0.1. Product will expire 30 days from registration.

Andrew November

 Andrew November is a shareholder with Liner Legal, LLC, where he dedicates his practice to representing individuals with disabilities. Andrew began by representing individuals denied disability benefits by the Social Security Administration and has since represented over 3,500 clients at the initial application stage, before Administrative Law Judges, in the United States District Court and the United States Court of Appeals. In 2014, Andrew expanded his practice to include Long Term Disability claims. Additionally, Andrew represents Deaf individuals who have been discriminated against and regularly brings lawsuits against people and institutions that deny equal access under the ADA. Andrew is a Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association member and founded the Social Security & Disability Section in 2017. Since 2015, he has served on the Deafness Advocacy Committee for the Cleveland Hearing & Speech Center. Andrew earned his B.S. degree from The University of Cincinnati and his J.D. degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

Keri November

Keri November received her M.A. degree in teaching American Sign Language as a Foreign Language from Columbia University in 2008. She received her undergraduate degree in education from New York University in 2006. Keri has taught ASL levels 1-4 since 2008 to high school and college students. Keri is currently a full-time lecturer of American Sign Language at Case Western Reserve University.

 

Keri's personal and professional goal is to foster understanding, tolerance, and communication between hearing and d/Deaf individuals culturally and through ASL.
