Many court reporters find themselves frustrated by repeated attempts to work with scopists that don’t quite work out. Files come back needing extensive cleanup, expectations feel misaligned, and the time and financial investment can feel wasted. As a result, some reporters abandon the idea of working with a scopist altogether, often at the expense of their own time, health, and long-term sustainability. This session reframes the problem: The issue is rarely about “good” versus “bad” scopists. Instead, it’s about alignment, communication, and team building in an unregulated profession with wide variations in training, preferences, and expectations. Drawing on years of experience working with court reporters and scopists across jurisdictions, Scoping International will explore why mismatches happen so frequently and how reporters can take ownership of building a reliable, effective scoping team. Attendees will learn why having support is not a luxury, but a strategic business decision, and how the right systems make delegation successful. Total CEU 0.10.

    Key topics include:

    • Why scoping expectations vary across reporters, regions, and work types
    • How clearly defined workflows and preferences protect both reporters and scopists
    • The role of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in creating consistency and trust
    • Best practices for onboarding, communicating with, and providing feedback to scopists
    • What to expect during the early stages of a new working relationship

This session emphasizes that successful reporter–scopist relationships are built, not found. With the right tools and mindset, court reporters can create a dependable support team that mirrors their own standards, reduces burnout, and supports a sustainable reporting career.

Court reporters are often told the answer to success is more briefs, more complexity, and more practice. But history and science tell a different story. In 1953 the Cohen twins achieved 99.789% accuracy at speeds up to 280 wpm on manual machines. A decade later, Dominick Tursi sustained 300 wpm for five minutes with near-perfect accuracy — feats far more demanding than today’s “records.” What was their secret? Simplicity. In this session you’ll learn why dense writing systems overload the brain, multiply errors, and accelerate fatigue — and why no amount of sacrifice or practice can overcome that barrier. Drawing on both historical legends and modern cognitive science, you’ll learn practical, brain-aligned strategies that reduce stress, improve accuracy, and sustain endurance. Attendees will learn how to identify the cognitive factors that affect writing performance, recognize brain-friendly alternatives to common struggles, and apply practical strategies to reduce fatigue while maintaining accuracy.
